Enjoy a celebration of community and culture at the 2023 Calgary Stampede Powwow
Calgary – The 2023 Calgary Stampede Powwow is back for two days only, and everyone is invited! Experience cultures, community, celebration, and extraordinary competition at the Saddledome on July 12 and 13.
The Calgary Stampede Powwow highlights the diversity of First Nations dancing, singing, and drumming, and features some of the best competitors from across North America. Access to this event is free with admission, so be sure to catch this must-see competition.
“We can’t wait to welcome everyone to the Stampede Powwow in the Saddledome. In our culture, a powwow is a celebration – something to bring our community together,” says Cheryl Crowchief, Powwow Coordinator. “This powwow is drawing dancers from all over Canada and the United States so visitors will see competition and get to learn about our cultures.”
Competitors will showcase a variety of dance styles, including Women’s and Men’s Fancy, Women’s and Men’s Traditional, Women’s Jingle, Men’s Buckskin, Men’s Grass, and Men’s Chicken Dance. Talented drummers and singers will play alongside dancers from each category, making for a truly remarkable and vibrant cultural experience.
If you’ve never been to a powwow, now is your chance to be dazzled by world-class competitors, learn about the origins and contemporary practices of powwow dancing and immerse yourself in this one-of-a-kind event. The competition builds daily - from noon to 6 p.m. - until the finals, where top dancers in each category compete for a chance to win part of the $200,000 in prize money.
